CAREER EXPERIENCE

Current position
2009 – present
Self Employed Logistics Consultant. Working closely with Transport Management Solutions, who are based in Bristol. I provide guidance and advice along with a named transport manager for VOSA’s records for companies who do not have an experienced Transport Manager, or who are having difficulties meeting legal requirements. I have also been undertaking Logistics NVQ assessments for a local college. Due to changes in government funding there are no longer any colleges requiring Logistics assessments, so I am now looking to further my career elsewhere

Last Position
Dec 2005 to 2009
Transport Manager – Transport, Culina Logistics (ex Wincanton Contract Manager)
Managing the transport operation at the new Culina Logistics Distribution Centre in Stafford.
The distribution centre delivers chilled produce throughout the length & breadth of the UK, principally, to high profile retail RDC’s. Deliveries are made on a 24hour/7-day week basis, operating 364 days a year.
As the CPC holder, I held the Operators Licence for the site, running a fleet of 38 tractors and 65 trailers. (double shifted). All Culina vehicles were operated at 44 tonnes. With a budget of £6.5 million, I managed a team of 100 drivers, and I was responsible for all transport functions within the distribution centre.
This was a completely new site, and I was involved in all aspects of the start up, including recruitment, driver training, initial route planning and maintenance arrangements. The vehicles utilise digital tachographs, so was I also responsible for driver training when the new vehicles were delivered.
Our Mercedes Benz vehicles were fitted with a sophisticated telemetrics system, and I used the information provided by the system to monitor fuel consumption and driving style. This has helped me to deliver outstanding fuel economy from our fleet – when I left Stafford the fleet was averaging 9.8 mpg at 44 tonnes!
I was tasked with operating at very stringent KPI’s, including fuel performance, maintenance costs, vehicle down-time, driver sickness, and customer service. I produce reports on a weekly basis for Culina and the Wincanton directors. In addition, I was responsible for all disciplinary issues at the site, including tachograph infringements.
After I had established the new Stafford site and it was running profitably, Culina wanted to put one of their own trainee managers in charge of the site and asked me to start up a new distribution centre in Leeds. My late wife was terminally ill at the time and I could not commit to the long daily commute, so I decided to leave Culina and further my career elsewhere.

Nov 2002 – Dec 2005
Operations Manager for Datechart Ltd, Brentwood Essex.
Reporting to the Company Director.
Datechart Ltd is a National catering company based in the South East.
The Director of the company is a personal friend with many varied business interests. Late in 2002 he asked me take charge of his company extending the operation into the Midlands and North of England. I achieved this objective and Datechart now has 22 outlets throughout the country extending as far north as York.
I was responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day running of the company, including budgeting, recruitment, purchasing stock, customer relations and the procurement of new sites.
Although I enjoyed the challenge of working in a new environment, this was only ever intended to be shortterm contract and once I achieved my objective, I was eager to move back into a management role within the Transport & Distribution industry.

2001- Nov 2002
Transport Training Course Co-ordinator at Stourbridge College.
Reporting to the Director of the Industrial Training Unit.
Responsible for the selection and safe operation of the fleet of training LGV’s.
Responsible for the planning and delivery of all logistics training, including LGV driving courses, CPC’s, Young Drivers scheme and NVQ’s.
The team of lecturers and instructors delivering these courses reported directly to me. I sat on various working parties with members of the FTA, RHTDC, RHA and the Institute of Logistics & Transport to plan the future training requirements of the logistics industry.

1998 – 2001
Distribution Systems Manager at Total Home Entertainment Ltd. (part of the Menzies group)
Reporting directly to the Operations Director
Responsible for the planning and control of all distribution functions, both third party and own transport.
Responsible for the delivery of 1.25 million parcels per annum on a next day service to our customers in the U.K. and a further 50,000 parcels to our export customers throughout the world.
Planned and co-ordinated deliveries of bulk stock from manufacturers/suppliers to the Newcastle –under-Lyme Distribution centre.
Negotiated contracts and managed the operation of third party parcel carriers and hauliers.
Ensured that the company operated within the regulations dictated by ‘O’ Licence requirements.
Purchased/leased and controlled the safe operation of a fleet of 80 company cars.
I was responsible for an Annual Departmental Budget of £5 million.
Negotiated a new contract for the groups next day delivery requirements, which delivered a cost saving of £500,000 per annum along with an improved service to the customers.

1996 – 1998
Logistics Manager at Brewhurst Health Food Supplies Ltd.
Reporting directly to the Managing Director
Responsible for the planning and control of all logistics functions, both in transport and warehousing across two sites – Byfleet in Surrey and Wythenshawe in Manchester. Both heavily unionised sites.
Responsible for the operation of 2 multi-temp warehouses & 40 multi-temperature LGV vehicles.
Attended all Management Committee meetings and contributed to all Company strategy decisions.
Responsible for all Union negotiation and agreements within the Logistics function.
Responsible for an Annual Departmental Budget of £3 million and a total staff responsibility of 80.
Over the financial year 96–97, I reduced my departmental overheads by over £100,000.
In my final 6 months with Brewhurst, I negotiated and introduced a new Union Agreement for the drivers and warehouse staff that delivered an improved service to our customers along with reduced labour costs to the company.

1992 – 1996
Transport Manager of Powerhouse Retail Ltd. at Waltham Cross, North London.
This was the largest depot in the company with a fleet of 65 H.G.V. vehicles.
When I started work at the Waltham Cross depot it had a long history of industrial unrest and poor productivity. Within three months I transformed the site from its original state, to be the most efficient depot within the company.
While at Powerhouse I completed a 1-week residential Negotiation Skills course, and after achieving a high pass rate in the tests at the end of the course I was asked to attend a 1-week Advanced Negotiations Skills course. Both courses were joint run by the Electricity Supply Industry and the EETPU Union. This training has been a great asset to me over the years – particularly when dealing with Unions.
Powerhouse was restructured in June 1996 and although I was offered a management role within the Company I decided to further my career elsewhere.

1976 – 1992
After graduating from college I was initially employed by the M.E.B. as an electrician in Stoke on Trent.
After passing the Electricity Council Salesmanship exams I had progressed into a position dealing directly with customers, giving advice on the various services offered by the M.E.B. when Powerhouse absorbed the retailing side of the company in 1992.
