Asset Management – Investment Trusts – Client Director / Business Strategy, ED (Based in London, UK)
The Business
JPMorgan Asset Management’s investment trust business is a market leading business managing the affairs of twenty-two London Stock Exchange listed investment trust companies with some £12bn in assets and one New York listed closed end fund with $190m of assets. It is a very significant contributor to the overall profitability of the JPMAM’s UK Funds Business.
The Role
We are looking to add a person to the team who can, over the next 12- 18 months, become a full time Investment Trust Client Director but also play a leading role in working with colleagues, particularly in the Sales, Investor Relations, Marketing and PR teams, to participate in the development and oversee the execution of a Direct to Consumer marketing strategy and a Platform strategy for the investment trust business. The successful candidate will also have responsibility for working with internal partners and our investment trust boards to develop trust specific sales and marketing strategies, driving improvement in the quality and consistency of board reporting, and specifically working with partners in Sales, Investor Relations, PR and Marketing to develop key measures of success (‘KPI’s) and appropriate metrics.
The Client Director Role
Each of JPMAM’s investment trusts has a client director allocated to it who, given the importance of these clients, reports to the Head of the Investment Trust Business. The Client Director has a wide ranging role which involves regular interaction with the independent non executive directors of the investment trust companies themselves, working internally with the investment managers, investment directors, product desks and operations teams as well as externally with market facing professionals in the broking, accounting, legal and investment trust industry areas. A Client Director would typically attend 40 Board and Committee meetings per annum in which they are expected to fully participate as the face of J.P. Morgan. The Client Director would also be expected to interact extensively with JPMAM’s sales and marketing and administration teams to ensure the business can react quickly and decisively to specific investment trust or wider market developments.
As a Client Director the successful candidate would ultimately be the person:
Responsible for up to seven JPMAM investment trust client relationships. This will involve some overseas travel.
Responsible for developing and maintaining a good working relationship between each of these independent investment trust boards and JPMAM.
Responsible for maintaining the confidence of each board by ensuring that high quality service and support is provided so as to enable them to fulfill their responsibilities as directors and demonstrate that J.P.Morgan acts to the highest fiduciary standards.
Responsible for developing and communicating points of JPMAM policy and working with those boards to plan and implement a strategic plan for that particular trust.
Required to keep abreast of opportunities and developments in the investment trust industry generally, including peer group companies and shareholders, both generally and trust specific.
Responsible for the development, implementation and execution of any discount management programme. This will involve close dialogue with internal and external stakeholders and a good knowledge of the buying and selling conditions for each trust.
Expected to play a likely key role in the growth and development of JPMAM’s investment trusts business; and
Given the importance of this role to the business, be a senior member of the investment trust management team and a Member of JPMAM’s Investment Trust Management Forum. Skills
In depth experience in dealing with investment trust boards / their non-executive directors is essential
Extensive experience in sales and / or marketing experience is required, with particular knowledge of the retail / direct to consumer channel in investment management
Excellent written, verbal and presentational skills
Gravitas and comfortable at working at all levels of seniority.
Self motivated and entrepreneurial approach
Client directors will be approved persons under FCA rules. In order to take on the role of a Client Director the candidate will require a minimum a qualification such as the Investment Management Certificate.
The accounting, legal and regulatory affairs of investment trust companies are complex and a good understanding of these is desirable but not essential.
This role encompasses the performance of UK regulated activity. The successful candidate will therefore be subject to meeting UK regulatory requirements in the assessment of fitness, propriety, knowledge and competence (as assessed by the Firm) and (where appropriate) approval by the UK Financial Conduct Authority and/or the Prudential Regulation Authority to carry out such activities.
