Operations Manager (Huddersfield)
Yorkshire Tiger are the low cost division of Arriva operating a number of bus services in the Huddersfield area. In May 2016 circumstances meant I took the opportunity to have a change of outlook and experience a new perspective of logistics.
I am responsible for a staff of 4 supervisors and 77 drivers, from which a fleet of 30 buses are operated.
Responsibilities:
1) I am responsible for all aspects of service reliability and health and safety. I am accountable for a yearly operating budget and also financial viability of the depot. I make monthly presentations to the MD.
2) Driver management and disciplines including dismissals
3) Attendance management
4) Dealing with customer complaints and resolutions
5) Maintaining good relations with the local Passenger Transport Authority and highways bodies
6) Developing partnerships with local community organisations
7) Driver engagement and motivation, including union relations
Achievements:
1) Achieved 95% score in internal health and safety audit in September 2016.
2) Increase in revenue on routes in Huddersfield after tweaks to operated services
3) Reduction of one the day sickness to single to less than 1% at Waterloo depot
4) Successful recruitment drive of 30 drivers for start up of Barnsley depot, which opened its doors in February to operate new routes.
5) Sponsorship of Huddersfield Food Festival at zero cost.
6) Partnership with local football team, with mutual advertising agreements and increased profile for Yorkshire Tiger in local community.

Transport Shift Manager (Hull depot), Air Products Contract
*From June 2015 the contract was taken in house so I was a direct employee of Air Products
Responsibilities:
1. Direct management of 38 strong driving team in Hull and satellite depot of 4 drivers in Middlesbrough and 10 drivers in Motherwell.
2. Ensure all legislative requirements are meant and all depots are 100% legally compliant
3. Liase with the customer to ensure their daily requirements are met
4. Driver husbandry responsibilities, including performance management, and disciplinary action. Sickness management.
5. Maintain good relations with the driver representative(s) at the Hull and satellite depots within a strongly unionized work force
6. Ensure correct paperwork is produced by drivers and compliance with bespoke requirements from customer’s portfolio.
7. Validate driver claims submitted on a daily basis.
Achievements:
1. Achieve record result for contract in health and safety audit in 2014 of 94%
2. Successfully co-ordinate recovery operation following a roll-over of a liquid nitrogen tanker in Kings Lynn in June 2012
3. Successfully launch two recruitment drives in the depot introducing new drivers to the depot.
4. Arrange wholesale shift changes in Jan 2011 and recently in 2013 within a strongly unionized environment
5. Internal recruitment of 2nd Hull Shift Manager to the depot in September 2010

Contract Supervisor, Air Products Contract
Responsibilities:
1. Liaison with a demanding customer whilst ensuring drivers complete their duties in accordance with their terms and conditions in a strongly unionised environment.
2. Over see daily plan and liase with customer and provide solutions to scheduling issues.
3. Ensure that dept KPIs are met with regards to driver supply. Maintain weekly KPI figures for national statistics
4. Co-ordinate status of national driving resource and ensure compliance with the customer’s requirements.
5. Part of my role on the contract is also to cover different locations within the business when not working from my base location in Carrington. I also support the package gas contract while regional managers are on leave. I am responsible for ensuring that o licence obligations are adhered to whilst promoting a safe working environment.
6. Dealing with direct employment issues including sickness absence management, payroll and disciplinary processes.
7. Developing and maintaining constructive and positive working relationships with the site trade union.
8. Investigate any safety incidents and look to develop preventative actions.
Achievements:
1. Development of relationship with third party hauliers to supplements the flexibility of traction resource available to the customer. The nature of the business prevents the use of agency staff.
2. Involvement in pilot for the implementation of hand held delivery devices – with the associated support provided to ensure drivers use the devices effectively
3. Ability to operate in different depots and hit the ground running. I have a sound knowledge of the requirements of the business at the customer’s different sites.
4. I gained my international CPC in 2005

HORIZON RECRUITMENT

Recruitment Consultant
Responsibilities:
1. I was recruited by Horizon to run their newly established logistics recruitment office in Bradford
2. Large area of coverage encompassing Bradford and the outlying areas of Kirklees and Calderdale.
3. Agreement of rates with customers – whilst ensuring acceptable margins of profitability were achieved.
4. Manage the offices advertising and recruitment campaigns.
5. Oversee invoicing and payment of customers and drivers.
Achievements:
1. Development of a profitable office – with the creation of a strong customer portfolio.
2. Involvement in the start of off a Polish Recruitment drive – I was asked to lead the first recruitment drive in the Polish town on Katovice. This included the recruitment of industrial personnel.
3. Contract specific recruitment campaign for Warrington based customer
4. Strong driver retention in what is a fluid driver market.
5. Development of a good knowledge of the haulage business in the West Yorkshire region and respect from the key operators in the region.

My career within the field of driver recruitment started with Drive Hire, where I was to run their Bradford office, effectively turning round a dormant office into an emergent business. Towards the close of 2003 I was approached by another recruitment business in the area, with the opportunity to work within a greater area without post code restrictions.
HOYER UK LTD
August 2002 – April 2003
Location Transport Manager, Northampton
Responsibilities:
1. Management of TLS bulk operation at Northampton (25 drivers), including satellite depots in Hull and Tipton, (5 and 2 drivers respectively).
2. Compliance to O Licence requirements – and promotion and preservation of safe working practices.
3. Planning of daily delivery requirements and management of labour pool to ensure sufficient driving resource to meet requirements (including agency staff). TLS could prove to be very reactive to the requirements of its customers – a good customer facing attitude was required.
Achievements:
1. Able to run and manage a small stand alone transport operation.
2. Successful management of local driving agencies to ensure regular supply of support driving staff. Effective control of agency prices.
June 2001 – August 2002
Location Transport Manager, Jarrow and Immingham
Responsibilities:
Location Transport Manager, TotalFina Petroleum Contract, Jarrow and Immingham. I, along with a partnering manger, had responsibility for the management of over 80 drivers, and the control of a fleet of 37 petroleum tankers delivering fuel throughout the UK. In addition I was also directly responsible for an intensive 4 vehicle operation in Jarrow supplying the North East of England.
Achievements:
1. In this role I developed my front-line management skills and gained significant experience of industrial relations amongst a heavily unionised workforce.
2. Oversaw the recruitment and training of 30 new driver (to absord the closure of the Leeds terminal).
3. Led an access trials project for 44 tonne tanks delivering to customer site in the North East. As a result a small fleet of urban artics were ordered
4. Successfully co-ordinated the on scene incident response to a tanker rollover on the M1 motorway.
August 1999 – June 2001
Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Co-ordinator
Responsibilities:
1. During my time in this role personnel changes meant I was to assume the role of running the department. I was released from this role when a new manager was recruited.
2. As part of my role I carried out statistical analysis of the company’s safety performance against KPIs and made monthly presentations to the UK Board of Directors on current safety KPIs and new initiatives. I delivered similar presentations at senior management meetings bi-monthly.
Achievements:
1. I oversaw Hoyer UK’s successful re-accreditation to ISO 9001 in the summer of 2001.
2. Organisation of the company’s annual Safety Seminar in 2000 for Senior Company Management, with an Emergency Response exercise simulated in the afternoon, involving both practical and desk top exercises.
3. Kick started a project team that was to review and restructure Hoyer UK’s Emergency Response Procedures. In a later role I was to see this work put to the test first hand.
4. I also co-ordinated the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition in 2000 and 2001.
