Christian Durugo
I currently work as a Compliance Manager. I am responsible for overseeing the anti-money laundering (AML) systems, and act as a focal point for related inquiries and overseeing and supporting the business with compliance and regulatory monitoring. I am also responsible for drafting and reviewing policies and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance. Working as a compliance officer has given me the experience in AML and KYC risks, obligations and practice.
Having worked for the FCA for almost 4 years, my role at the FCA allowed me to work both independently and as part of a team, prioritising appropriately and escalating where necessary. My role gave me in-depth knowledge of regulatory activities that impact firms and consumers. As part of my role, I engaged with consumer credit firms, and in previous roles, engaged with consumers.
In my current role, I am proficient in both written and verbal communication. In my role in the FCA’s Authorisations division, I managed several cases where I analysed complex information, identified key information and presented conclusions. In my role as Co-Chair of Spectrum (A staff network at the FCA), I was involved in discussions with, and developed and maintained effective relationships with senior members of staff, and internal and external stakeholders. Outside of regulatory compliance, I am a local candidate. I often attend and participate both local and national political conferences and meetings with councillors, Members of Parliament and Party officials. This allows me to effectively exercise my ability to influence, persuade, and challenge the status quo with well-reasoned arguments, tact and diplomacy.
My roles have allowed me to exercise sound judgment, as I make logical and timely decisions, cutting through complexity and seeing the big picture. I demonstrate good organisational skills by managing both roles, plus effectively planning and managing competing priorities and challenging workload. I maintain high standards when under pressure and resources are limited, whilst remaining tenacious, resilient and flexible and outcome focused.
I have experience working with regulatory changes impacting regulation in the form of Consumer Credit and SM&CR. I can deal with sensitive, high reputational risk consumer issues and have a keen interest to build technical capabilities. I have proven coaching skills in my role as mentor to young people plus motivate and provide support both within and outside of regulatory compliance. I am also experienced in effectively managing large and complex projects.
