Experienced Workshop and Service Van Technician

Introduction: We are an agency recruiting for a local Breakdown & Recovery Operator. Our client, a well-established, local automotive business, is looking to recruit an Experienced Workshop Technician to join their team.

Location: Depot based from Houghton Regis, Dunstable

MAIN PURPOSE

Responsible for carrying out servicing and repair work to customer’s vehicles, from light goods vehicles to PSVs and HGVs. Acting as an Ambassador for the company by meeting our customers high expectations with a positive ‘can do ’attitude at all times, both face to face and by telephone. It is essential to establish a close working relationship with other staff to promote a professional cohesive company image.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLLTIES

Technical

· Bring customer vehicles safely into the workshop for repair and / or inspection.

· Carry out MOT preparations, preventative maintenance inspections (PMIs), take for brake and light check, servicing and general repair work to VOSA standards on customer and company vehicles.

· Drive vehicles for collection / delivery to customer, road tests to ensure defects are rectified, present vehicles at VOSA testing stations.

· Use company TEXA computer system and company laptop to diagnose vehicle faults.

· Experience of using a Diagnostic tool tablet is preferable but not essential.

· Regularly check the tools and equipment in the workshop are serviceable and report any defects immediately to the office.

· Steam clean customer vehicles prior to inspection or MOT as required.

· Give technical advice to customers, their drivers and other Statham employees where appropriate.

· Assisting with Service Van and Recovery Call Outs when necessary.

Administration

· Update workshop administrator on the progress on customer vehicles regularly throughout the day.

· Complete all PMI paperwork and internal job sheets as jobs are finished ensuring vehicle registration (or trailer ID), mileage, time taken to complete job, subcontractors used, parts / consumables are noted so invoicing can be processed.

· Forward all PMI sheets, job sheets, parts invoices, delivery notes, tacho or MOT certificates and drivers hours sheets to workshop administrator as soon as possible.

· Order parts when authorized using company purchase order system.

· Take delivery of parts ensuring all invoices and goods returns notes are forwarded to Statham’s office.

· Assist with the preparation of estimates for repair work where required.

HEALTH & SAFETY

· Use the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.

· Advise customer’s drivers to sit in waiting area and keep all unauthorized personnel out of the workshop.

· Maintain a clean and tidy workshop. Store dirty overalls and work wear in laundry, general waste in bins, waste oils in container provided and oily rags in covered bins, flammable aerosols to cabinet, tools and equipment returned to correct storage daily, spillages on floor swept as required, recycle all appropriate materials in correct containers provided.

· Ensure all customer vehicles are locked and key stored in key cabinet before going off shift.

· Advise office if first aid box is requiring items as necessary.

· Report all accidents or near misses.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Skills and Ability

· Organised in planning daily tasks, with ability to multi-task more than one job at a time.

· Ability to use initiative to suggest solutions to problems.

· Able to understand and assist customers as efficiently and effectively as possible, but without compromising vehicle safety.

DRIVING LICENCE

HGV licences preferable so you can road test HGV’s (The company has previously assisted mechanics to obtain their HGV 1 & 2 and recovery qualifications)

EXPERIENCE

· Previous experience of working with various types of vehicle makes and models.

Knowledge

· Strong technical knowledge of various types of vehicles make and models.

· Basic computer literacy

· Basic administration skills

Shift Pattern: Monday to Friday: 08:00 – 18:00 and Saturday: 08:00 – 12:00. Current Techs have one Saturday off a month. However, flexibility is ideal and Overtime available. The company would consider it if you prefer late/night shifts.

Salary: Basic: £28,000 – £35,000 + OT (Service van may be available if willing to do out of hours call outs)

Salary is dependent on qualifications (IRTEC or C&G, Apprenticeship, NVQ equivalent.

Higher rate would be negotiated if you are Senior/Supervisor Level.

Job Status: Permanent with immediate interviews and starts.

Vetting: Our client will undertake vetting including referencing for up to 5 years. They may also require a full NPPV Level 2 Police Check. If you have any criminal convictions or cautions in the UK or abroad you MUST declare them to us at the time of applying.
