Our Digital Development and Applied Sciences Team focus on these areas and are helping us rapidly transform the Group’s capabilities – you could have a bright future with them.
In joining their Digital Engineering team you’d find yourself working with a group of pathfinders and trailblazers at the hub of this transformational agenda.
You’ll be developing platforms which transform and analyse data at scale for the benefit of all our colleagues and customers.
And with your skills spanning across data mining/analysis/modelling and Hadoop ecosystems you’ll get to work on a vast range of high-profile projects.
This will also give you some horizon-expanding exposure to a host of wider technologies and careers in data.

You’d be focusing primarily on the following areas:
• Ensuring data quality in data collection from our data lake of structured and unstructured sources
• Having responsibility for the structure, packaging and repeatability of datasets that nourish our Robotics, Cognitive and Data Science areas
• Working with our new Hadoop platforms and cutting-edge toolsets to deliver value over and above traditional database technologies
• Acting as a partner to your Model Developer/Machine Learning Engineering colleagues to provide high-quality data for model build, insight and automation.
So you’ll need to show a real passion for developing new solutions and translating data into analytics based opportunities – role-modelling Data Engineering as it should be in the new digital age.
What are we looking for within your toolbox?
• An understanding of Big Data Architecture, preferably with hands-on experience building both batch and real-time data pipelines within scalable distributed environments
• Hadoop ecosystems and associated architecture such as Spark, Storm, Kafka, Oozie, MapReduce etc. with the emphasis on consumption i.e. datastores, ingestion tools, streaming technologies etc.
• Expertise using HIVE and SQL (HiveQL, Pig), ideally with optimisation performance experience in partitioning, bucketing, indexing etc.
• Knowledge of relational database technologies (e.g. Oracle, Teradata, SQL Server) and associated analytical techniques and tools
Additionally we’re wanting you to have at least one programming/coding language under your belt with Python, Java, Scala, R, etc. being particularly useful, similarly with NoSQL databases such as HBase or Cassandra.
And if you also have knowledge of enterprise data modelling applications such as de-normalised views, star schemas, third-normal form, OLAP cubes etc. then you’re sounding like our ideal person.
