Experience
The majority of my experience after completing my apprenticeship and a couple of years as a diesel plant fitter has been in the road haulage industry.
During this time, I have driven many types of articulated and rigid vehicles of all sizes and cargoes, including wide loads. Products ambient and temperature controlled also.
In 1978 to 1980 I was transport manager for a small general haulage firm having control of a small fleet (12) of Transit vans and 7.5-ton vehicles. I was the cup holder at the time.
Next, I moved to controlling a fleet of both company and owner operators at a private hire firm where I was responsible for delegating the various tasks to drivers by radio, and dealing with customers who walked in seeking a taxi.
February 1981 and the following twelve months I worked abroad hauling gas oil from Aqaba to Baghdad.
1982 – 86 I worked on general haulage where I carried anything requested and used a variety of trailers and securing methods for the loads i.e.; rope & sheeting.
1986 – 1990 I purchased my own vehicle and later refrigerated trailer to haul cargo around the UK and Europe.
