Hours – 37 hours – depot based
The role
We are currently looking to appoint a committed HGV Technician to join the Fleet Maintenance Team. You will be responsible for carrying out the full range of servicing and repair of all Council vehicles and plant, ensuring we have operational and roadworthy vehicles to fulfil our contractual and legal obligations.
Qualifications
Level 3 HGV Maintenance and Repair qualification or equivalent qualification.
Category C is desirable or be willing to train towards obtaining the required licence.
Duties and responsibilities
Carry out scheduled maintenance and defect repairs on council’s fleet of vehicles, plant and equipment to include light and heavy vehicles, specialist vehicles such as mechanical sweepers, refuse vehicles, plant and trailers.
Carry out safety inspection, services and PDI’s to manufacturers standards in line with the required inspection criteria, as outlined in the DVSA (HGV) inspections manual
To have and maintain a good working knowledge of fleet including electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic repairs and diagnostic procedures; minor body repairs and welding techniques.
Prepare and submit HGV vehicles to DVSA approved test facility for annual MOT testing
Carry out diagnostic repairs using computer based diagnostic systems
Ensure that all requirements with respect to the health, safety and welfare of staff within the post holder’s responsibility are properly met. This duty extends to such other persons, e.g. contractors and members of the public, who may be affected by the activities within the post holder’s remit. The post holder also has a general responsibility to contribute to the effective management of health, safety and welfare across the Company as a whole.
Operate mobile response breakdown service to attend offsite breakdowns and effect necessary repairs
To assess damage, check availability of and order necessary parts, arrange collection/delivery of parts and carry out effective repairs to high standard
Maintain computer and written records of all jobs from start to finish to include repairs carried out, parts used, start and finish time, total hours taken, time VOR etc in accordance with DVSA regulations, manufacture standards and company requirements.
Undertake/monitor VMS audits including walk round-around checks, housekeeping, fire safety, risk assessments, safe systems of work, vehicle checks, task talks, gate house checks, COSHH assessments, etc, in conjunction with other fleet team members.
Keep up to date with all current vehicle legislation and advances in technologies and attend mandatory training courses as identified by the Fleet Management.
Undertake any other duties commensurate with the responsibilities of the post
Person Specification
Technical/mechanical experience of working in an HGV workshop.
An in-depth knowledge of the vehicle inspection and repair standards & processes
Ability to diagnose vehicle, plant and equipment for repair
Good knowledge and understanding of mechanics, electrics and hydraulics systems
Completion of all test certificates, job sheets, associated paperwork & documentation in the correct manner
Maintain current product knowledge and attend training courses as required
The ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, management and user department representatives, suppliers and contractors.
Ability to attend Roadside call in a safe manner
The ability to work in a pressurised environment and to work within timescales.
Working knowledge of Health & Safety practices.
Use of own hand tools and equipment in workshop
Professional polite manner, reliable and self-motivated
Enthusiastic and flexible approach to work. Work bank holiday on Friday is required, and other times to meet the needs of the business.
